The Almshouses
For centuries, Uxbridge United Welfare Trust has made available almshouse accommodation for people in need in the Uxbridge area. The present almshouse block, Woodbridge House, is an attractive, well maintained, period building set in landscaped gardens right in the heart of Uxbridge.
Woodbridge House was built in 1906. Around 60 years later a Trustees' Office was added and then the wardens' house and the two, 2-bedroom, flats.
The twenty-two elderly residents now living at Woodbridge House have the peace of mind and security of an on-site manager to refer to if they have a problem. The flats, refurbished in 2003, are warm and cosy, and consist of a large lounge with bed alcove, a separate kitchen and a shower room. They are for single occupancy only.
Applicants for almshouse accommodation must be . . .
single persons of 59 years or over able to live independently in need of housing or re-housing* have lived in, or have had strong connections with, the Uxbridge area
* Those who can afford to buy or to rent accommodation suited to their needs in the private sector are unlikely to qualify for almshouse flats.
To apply for a flat, or for further information on them and the many other facilities at Woodbridge House, please ring 01895-232057 between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday and speak to the manager, Mrs. P. Burgess.
